Ootukkaadu Venkata subbaiyar

OotukkaaDu VenkaTa Kavi - Also known as OotukkaaDu VenkaTasubbaiyar, though he preferred this title. Very little is known about this composer. He was born in about the year 1700 in Needamangalam to Muthukrishna Iyer. One of his descendants was Needamangalam Krishnamurthi Bhagavathar. His gurus were Needamangalam Rajah Bhagavathar and he founded the Rudrapasupathi Pillai sishya parampara. He composed many kritis in Sanskrit and Tamil, mainly on Lord Krishna. His songs were known to often exclude the name of the deity in favor of description. He died in 1765 in his hometown, Needamangalam.

    Arunagirinathar

Arunaagirinaatar - author of the famous songs Tiruppugazh. He came from a rich family in the 15th century. He is said to have contracted a cruel disease and when trying to jump to his death from the tower of the temple at Tiruvannaamalai, Lord Muruga saved him. From then on, he was cured of his disease, became a hermit, and began singing songs in praise of Muruga. He composed about 16,000 songs, of which 2,000 are available today - and he set his verse to music himself. His great contributions to Carnatic music include his mention of several ragams and taaLams, with examples of the 35 and 108 tala systems. Some of his songs do not fit under any tala classifications, and he is undoubtedly a master of tala, which earned him the title "Candapaavlapperuman." His songs give the essence of the Vedas and Upanishads, abandoning any division between Shaivism and Vaishnavism. He is said to have possessed the ability to migrate from one body to another. Wanting to cure the king from an intense stomachache, he entered the body of a parrot and flew away to bring the king an herb to cure him. When he returned, he found his abandoned body cremated by those who were jealous of him, so he supposedly spent the rest of his life as a parrot.

  • Arunasala Kaviraayar

    Arunasala Kaviraayar (1711 - 1779)

He was born in TillaiyaDi close to Seerkazhi in 1711 A.D. to Shaivite parents Nallatambi PiLLai and Valliammai. According to family tradition, he began his education at 5 and at 12, when his father died went to the Dharmapuram Mutt to study Tamil and Sanskrit. At 18, he left but continued his study of Tamil for 12 years. He married at 30 in Paruppur and set up a jeweler's shop, while keeping up his studied. He discovered the beauty of Tirukkural and Kamban's RaamaaayaNa.

One day he wanted to buy some gold at a cheaper rate in PonDicerry. On his way, he stopped at Seerkazhi, where there was a branch of the Dharmapuram Mutt - its head Cidambaram PiLLai had been his colleague at Dharmapuram, and at his request, completed a prabandam here before leaving for PonDicerry. When he returned, Cidambaram PiLLai asked him to settle down with his family in Seerkazhi - from then he was called Seerkazhi Arunaacala Kaviraayar.

He composed many works. When 2 men (VenkaTaraamayyar and KOdanDaraamayyar) who knew music well asked him to teach them Kamban's RaamaayaNam, he composed an opera of this work at their suggestion, which is the famous "raama naaTaka keertanai." He wanted the first performance of this dance song at Shreerangam where Kamban had his first performance (arangETram), but the priest refused unless the Lord allowed permission himself. At this point, the poet sang "En paLLikonDeer ayya" (mOhanam, aadi), and the Lord Ranganaata of Shreerangam appeared to both the poet and the temple priests in their sleep, and the priests arranged for the arangETram. After this, the composer was patronized by kings and nobles all over. His opera gives us 40 raagams, including some rare ones. It starts with invocations to deities, declaration by an actor of the greatness of King Dasaratha, and the traditional story of the RaamaayaNa is closely followed. It includes 197 daarus (descriptive songs), 278 verses in virutam meter, and 56 dvipadis (songs of 2 lines).

Arunaacala Kavi's darus are famous - and AriyakuDi Raamaanuja Aiyyangaar sang one or two in every concert. Pieces like YaarO ivar yaarO and Shree raamacandranukku are popular. Modern scholars of music consider him along with MututaanDavar and Marimutta PiLLai to be the Early Music Trinity of Carnatic music.

    Muthu Thandavar

    Muthu Thandavar (1600 AD)

Muttu TaaNDavar - In a town named Seerkaazhi, normally associated with the Tamil composer TirugnAnasambandar, another Tamil composer, MuttutaanDavar was born in 1560 into a family that traditionally constructed and played musical instruments for temples. They belonged to a community named the Isai VElala community. The child was named tAnDavan (one who dances) after naTarAja, the god of dance, the presiding deity at neighbouring Cidambaram.

When he was young, tAnDavan was afflicted with an incurable disease which severely affected his appearance and his health. He was unable to follow his family's profession, and many in the town shunned him. So, he found relief in listening to the songs sung on Lord Shiva, by a lady called ShivabhAgyam, who belonged to a family devoted to the arts. He would go everyday to her house and listen to her despite protests from relatives and family, who eventually stopped feeding him. As a result, he took the prasaadam (blessed food offered) at the temple once a day. But this weakened him.

One day, while worshipping, he found himself near the room that contained the vaahanams (the mounts and vehicles of the gods), and crawled in and fainted. No one knew, and soon the priests extinguished the lamps and left for the day. Guards locked the temple doors. When taanDavan awoke to consciousness, he realized he was locked in and cried out loud to the god of the temple, Brahmapureeshawa, asking him for help. Soon the temple priest's young daughter approached with a vessel of food. She fed him and asked him what his trouble was. When he told her, she told him to go to Cidambaram and compose a song a day on the Lord. When taanDavan protested, saying he could never find words for so many songs, the little girl asked him to use the first words he heard from devotees as he entered the temple.

The child then disappeared. It was dawn. The guards came in and so did the priests. They could barely recognise the effulgent being they found in the sanctum. Gone was the emaciated figure. He was iridescent like the mother of pearl. They renamed tAnDavan MuttutAnDavar. Then MuttutaanDavar realised that the girl was LokanAyaki, the presiding Goddess of Seerkazhi who had come in the guise of the priest's daughter.

MuttutAnDavar began his journey to Cidambaram, an act that soon became a daily ritual. On the first day, he reached the sanctum there and heard the words BhoolOka kailAya giri Cidambaram. He used the words as the opening line of his first kriti. As he finished singing the piece, five gold coins appeared on the steps below the deity, which he took as the Lord's reward for his composition. MuttutAnDavar gratefully accepted the coins and also found that his illness was cured. MuttutaanDavar continued to compose daily at the temple. But one day, when he entered the sanctum, MuttutAnDavar found complete silence. No one spoke. He waited patiently, hoping that someone would say something and he could use the words. But all the devotees remained silent. MuttutAnDavar could only hear his heart speaking, crying out in desperation. Thus sprang the composition - pEsAdE nenjamE (O mind! Do not speak!) . He realised that his dependence on the words of others had ended. He now began composing on his own.

Once, on his way to Cidambaram, he was bitten by a snake. To cure the poison, he composed "Arumarundondru tanimarundidu" (in mohanam, made popular by D.K. Jayaraaman). Another day, the river Kollidam was in spate and MuttutAnDavar could not cross to reach Cidambaram. Out of sorrow sprang the piece - kANAmal vINilE kAlam KazhittOmE. The speciality of this song is its graphic description of the Cidambaram Temple. Then, the river parted and on reaching the sanctum, out of gratitude, he sang - darisanam seivEnE.

He continued to compose songs, daily. The story is told that in 1640AD, in the month of aavani, the day of the star poosham, MuttuTANDavar appeared in the sanctum and sang the piece mANIkkavAcagar pErenakkutaravallAyO ariyEn. A great light emanated from the sanctum and in that light, MuttutANDavar was gathered into the arms of the Lord and became one with him.

Very few of MuttutaanDavar's songs have survived. Annaamalai University, under the auspices of Sangita Kalanidhi Tiruppamburam N Swaminatha Pillai, collected sixty of them and set them to ragas. These are sung by many today and the kritis have been rescued from near oblivion.

    Marimutta PiLLai

    Marimuthu Pillai (1712 - 1787)

Born in Tillaividangan near Cidambaram to a Shaivite family in 1712 A.D., he was a great Tamil composer. His father was Deivangal Perumal PiLLai. Even at an early age, he composed beautiful songs in Tamil, then married and had 3 sons. The eldest, named after his grandfather, composed a prabandam "Umaiyaval Maalai" at the age of 12, and then became so devout he left home. Marimutta PiLLai prayed to Lord NaTaraaja (lord of dance) that his son would return, and the Lord assured him he would return if he composed a prabandham in praise of Cidambaram. The composer hurried to the temple the next morning, prayed with great devotion and composed the famous "Puloyoor vennba"(Puliyoor is another name for Cidambaram). His son soon returned.

He has many other compositions, and 50 songs on Lord NaTaraaja - only 25 of which are now available. His writing is in refined and clear Tamil. Some are in an affectionate but sarcastic style. His songs usually have many caraNams, each presenting a new idea, each in the same tune. In his song "Orukkaal shiva cidambaram" (aarabi, aadi), he says that you only need to utter the name of Shiva Cidambaram once to attain salvation. In "kaalai tooki ninraaDum deivamE" (yadukula kaambhOji, aadi), celestial beings like Nandi and Naaradar play musical instruments like the yaazh or maddalam (see instruments). In "Edukku ittanai mOditaan unakku endanmElayya" (shuruTTi, roopakam), he begs Lord NaTaraaja not to be hurt by his sarcastic language. Many stories are connected to those of Shiva (ShivapuraaNam).
